How It Works
Auto insurance will protect you from any financial loss you receive as result of an accident or other damage you receive to your car. How much you are covered in certain situation depends on what type of policy you have. There are six main types of coverage you will find in most basic auto insurance policies:
- Bodily Injury- Bodily injury will protect any injury that you cause as result of an accident. It also covers your family members and anyone else that has your permission to drive your car. Bodily injury also takes affect if you are sued as result of an accident. It is always a good idea to have more then the minimum to help protect your valuable assets.
- Personal Injury Protection- Also known as PIP, and it covers the cost of treatment of injury that you, the driver or any of the passengers sustain in an accident. PIP will cover medical bills and the cost of lost wages if you are unable to work as a result of your injuries.
- Property Damage Liability- Property damage will pay for any damage to property that you cause while driving. This includes automobiles as well as any other structure that your car may cause damage to.
- Collision- Collision will cover the cost of damage to your car as a result of an accident with another car or object. It can even cover your car if you were to flip over.
- Comprehensive- Comprehensive insurance will cover all aspects of your automobile not related to collisions. This includes vandalism, theft, fire and other forms of damage.
- Uninsured and Underinsured- This coverage will protect you and your family form an accident with a driver how has insurance or lacks insurance to cover your costs. This will also cover you during hit and runs.
When deciding on an auto insurance policy you will have to decide on your deductible and premium. The premium is your monthly payment. Your deductible is how much you pay out of pocket for repairs to your car. For example if your deductible was $500 then you would pay up to that amount to repair your car, if the accident was your fault. If the total bill is under $500 then you will pay the entire bill yourself, but if it is over $500 then you will only be required to pay the deductible. The higher your set deductible amount is the lower your premium will be. So you have to decide if you want to take a gamble on a high deductible and save money on your monthly premiums.
